Description

Sony Xperia X Compact is another sub 5 inch smartphone which stands for small phones in the world dominated by huge phablets. In the past Sony just made their flagships a little bit smaller but this time it’s a whole different phone with a mid-range chipset and a high price tag.

The phone comes with a 4.6 inch 720p display. It has a Snapdragon 650, 3 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes of ROM and also as well a 2700 mAh battery. Sony Xperia X Compact is also not waterproof anymore. That’s something which really surprising since this was an outstanding feature on the C Series. The build quality is still top-notch and even though it’s a plastic body found it feels pretty good. Some don’t like glossy finish since it’s a fingerprint magnet and looks wasted after seconds of using it and also it scratches easily.

The display is good because it’s protected by Gorilla Glass 4. It’s 9.5 millimeters thick and weighs 135 grams. Sony Xperia X Compact is not a super slim beauty but a compact good feeling smartphone. On the left side it got a dual slot for the microSD card and one SIM gap and on the opposite side of the frame are two buttons. For some the volume buttons maybe a bit too low and very hard to reach. The power button feels good and includes a fingerprint scanner but there is no scanner in the US version. This fingerprint scanner works fast and accurate and even of dirty hands. There is also one additional button to fire up the camera and you can also use it as a shutter which feels awesome.

Sony implemented USB type-c and includes a 1.5A 5 volt charger. The phone supports quick charge 3.0 but they do not include a proper charger. Charging times also pay with this one since it really uses the full 1.5 ampheres.

The phone has two microphones and as well two speakers and yes it got front-facing speakers. Call quality is awesome and the sound is good too. The 3.5 millimeter headphone jack output is always top quality as you know from Sony. The buttons are on screen buttons which make the screen feel even a bit smaller. Its top includes multicolor notification LED and speaker and the non mind-blowing 5 megapixel front facing camera. The rear is more exciting because here we get a great camera that is actually the same as in the Sony Xperia C with 23 megapixels and one lays out to focus sensor, a single LED flash and RGB color sensor for improved color reproduction.

Although the phone feels good but the materials a bit too easy to scratch. Around the glass on the front side and around corners give it a good feeling in hands. Sony Xperia X Compact plays bright and easy-to-read outside and also looks really sharp. 720p on the paper is not a lot but on 4.6 inches is more than you need. This also helps the chipset because the GPU has to work so hard as on a full HD a 2k screen. If you need you can also tweak the colors and the display settings to get them more tasty.

Sony Xperia X Compact runs Android Marshmallow and it’s not more close to stock but still has the Xperia Touch or some Sony absent bloat. It can also be customized in the settings but honestly who buys themes on Android. You can customise it all on your own which is free. The system feels fast and stable just some occasional lag from time to time like on every other phone.

Connectivity is great. Due to its plastic body the Wi-Fi signal is really outstanding and it beats P9 Plus. Bluetooth and call quality is also good as well as 4G works fine. The gigabytes are a bit too low for some people’s taste these days but luckily you can insert microSD card. RAM consumption is a bit too high of 70 percent which can be improved with the background services.

Battery life is really great that you can get four to five hours screen on time depending on your usage. It can easily get you through the day. There’s also ultra power saving mode but honestly you may never need it.

The main camera shoots 24 megapixel photos within 5 times optical zoom. It has improved low-light capabilities that supports now 5-axis, image stabilization, HDR photo mode. The 5-axis stabilization only kicks in a macro mode so usually you have free access stabilization. Unfortunately 4k recording has been replaced by videos at 60 frames per second. It also have all the modes from prevoius Xperia phones but 4k is missing. Manual mode gives you good control but auto mode works good too. Some pictures will be exposed but all-in-all great pictures. The colors look even a little bit more accurate than on the S7 but the overall image quality is good. Low-light photos were not as good as we expected with the laser AF but the predictive AF works really fine.

The front-facing camera also runs an ex-model sensor and can shoot 5 megapixel pictures with its 25 millimeter lens and an average of f 2.4. It’s ok for social media selfies but nothing super outstanding.

Sony Xperia X Compact runs on a Snapdragon 650 processor which isn’t as powerful as the Snapdragon 810 CPU found in the C5 Compact. It does not have the heat issues of the A10. Anyway still a decent performance and runs most modern games very fine nothing to worry about. The 720p display helps a lot to reduce to need computing power and it comes with all the important sensors having chera scope and magnetic sensor on board.

This phone could have been awesome but it’s just a pretty expensive small phone. It has a great form factory, good battery life, decent performance and great camera.
